On ( and off ) The Road - 40th Anniversary Series -2016-

Discipline Crimson 期を、11CD+5DVD+3Blu-rayでまとめたボックス。

Discipline Crimson 期については、3作品毎にボックス化するだけのマテリアルはあったはずにもかかわらずそうしなかったのは、新たな発掘音源が限られていることによるものと思われる。 KCCCシリーズや、DGM Live のダウンロード販売の再収録率が高まることでボックスとしての希少性が低くなることを避けたのであろう。 勿論3作品毎のボックス化にした場合、その1ボックス当たりの売上が期待できないという認識もあっただろうが。

上記を踏まえた上での本ボックスの特徴は、映像作品の充実である。
フレジュスでのライブより映像が綺麗なミュンヘンでのライヴ映像も素晴らしいが、やはり1984年の日本でのライヴ映像が素晴らしい。 販売済みのものより尺が長い編集済みヴァージョンの発掘と、編集前のヴァージョンの断片が収録は初めてのことである。 ただ複数日の衣装が同じであることから映像作品化を前提としたことが判った一方、収録日のクレジットが明確化が今ひとつ進まなかったのは残念である。

収録曲目、曲数は変わらないが、6曲が別ソースからのもので、かつ2016年に新たにリマスターされている。

もう1曲の ” Adrian and Robert ” は、同タイトル曲が KCCC42 の 『 Rehearsals & Blows 』 にも収録されているが、そちらが3分の編集に対して、本ディスクには8分弱に編集されている。 内容はあまり変わらないが。

一応1曲目が ” Larks' Tongues In Aspic Part III ” を中心に、残り3曲は3枚のアルバムの関連音源から各々抽出したものと思われるが、ランダムに音源を活用している可能性もある。
特に ” Are you recording Gary? ” においては、中間部に ” VROOOM ” のフレーズが出てくる所が興味深い。 多分 ” Red ” のフレーズをちょっといじっていた結果出てきたものと思われるが、それがそのまま10年後に ” VROOOM ” として完成したことになる。

本ディスクには、先ずDVD11の内容が音源フォーマットを変更してそのまま収録されている。
映像作品については、ミュンヘンでのライヴが6曲（DVD11では2曲）収録されている。
このミュンヘンでの映像は放送用のコンテンツをワイドスクリーン・フォーマットにしたもので、約1ヶ月前のフレジュスでのライヴに比べてステージも明るく、且つ映像も綺麗である。 版権の問題等色々あったのかもしれないが、フレジュスではなくミュンヘンでのこのライヴの映像ソフト化が先行されてもよかったのではないかと思う。
ただステージが明るかった分照明が強かったらしく、動きの少ないフリップ以外の3人は汗だらけとなっている。 特にブルーフォードは黄色のシャツが汗でぴったり肌にくっついてしまっている。

『 On (and off ) The Road 』 の最大の成果は、本ディスクに収録された1984年の来日公演の映像である。
この時のライヴは今はなきLD時代から形態を変えながらリリースされている。
(1) 1984年：『 Three Of A Perfect Pair Live In Japan 』
(2) 1991年：『 Three Of A Perfect Pair Live In Japan 』   (1)から ” Discipline ” と ” Three Of A Perfect Pair ” のライヴ映像が削除
(3) 2004年：『 Neal And Jack And Me 』 に、(2)がそのまま収録（日本語クレジットもそのまま）

ただ、収録日のクレジットが明確ではなく、(1)には無記載、(2)には4/29,30と記載、(3)には4/28と記載されている。 (3)については明らかなクレジットミスとしていて、本ディスクの Three of a Perfect Pair Live in Japan ( widescreen format ) は、4/30とクレジットされている。

4/29と4/30は、映像収録を前提として同じ衣装でステージに登場していることがわかる。 また、(3)と本ディスクの Three of a Perfect Pair Live in Japan ( widescreen format ) を同時に2台のプレイヤーで再生すると、ブリューがドラムとギターを演奏する ” Waiting Man ” において、同じ衣装のブリューが楽器間を移動するタイミングが異なっていることがわかる。

4/29の映像で特筆すべきことは、” Sleepless ” の中間部にフリップ抜きの3人による2分強の演奏パートが差し込まれていることで、ブルーフォードとレヴィンによる演奏にブリューが生ドラムで演奏に参加していく。 シングル・カメラでの映像ではフリップがブルーフォードに合図を送っているようにも見えるが、このパートが意図的なものなのかフリップの器材トラブルによるものなのかよく判らない。

ただ今回の widescreen format については、ライナーでデヴィッド・シングルトンが記載している通り、問題点はある。 オリジナルの4:3のフォーマットから上下を少しカットして、かつ横方向に少し延ばした映像となっており、この点だけは大いに悔やまれる。

1982年8月27のフレジュスでライヴを収録したものであるが、既存の映像作品や DGM Live のダウンロード音源とは異なる内容である。
先ず、ライヴ・アルバム用のマスター・テープからの初出音源として、1～6曲目が採用されている。 1982年のライヴ・アルバムを公式リリースしようとしていた事に驚かされるし、その音源が今回発掘されたことは非常に喜ばしい。
ただ、7～10曲目は既発音源からの採用とのことで、明確なクレジットはないが、DGM Live のダウンロード音源と同じものと思われる。
7～10曲目までのライヴ・アルバム用のマスター・テープが残っていないということは、そもそも作られていなかったという可能性もあるわけで、逆に捉えればライヴ・アルバムのリリースはかなり計画が進んでいたとも推測できる。

Asbury Park 1982 は、1982年7月31日のアズベリー・パークでのライヴ。 DGM Live からのダウンロード販売されたものと同じ。

Cap D'Agde 1982 は、1982年8月26日のキャップ・ダグドゥでのライヴ。
D.G.M. Collectors' Club の4作品目として、1,2,4,5,6,7の6曲がリリースされた後の、DGM Live からのダウンロード販売版（” Red ” と ” Indiscipline ” を追加）したものと同じ内容である。

Frejus 1982 は、DGM Live からのダウンロード販売されたものと同じ。

Europe 1982 は、フレジュスでのライヴ音源だが、ライヴ・アルバム用マスターから収録された初出音源となる。 この音源はそのまま CD17 の一部として使われている。

Live at Alabamahalle は BLU-RAY 14 に収録されたものと同じコンテンツが、TV放送用の4:3のフォーマットで収録されている。
