The Gates of Paradise

難産な作品であった。
DGM のコンピ、『 Sometimes God Hides 』 でそのリリースがアナウンスされたのが1996年。　それから2年たってのリリースである。
『 Sometimes God Hides 』 においては、エリザベス・ホールでの4日間のインスタレーションから収録されたように記載してあったり、『 Sometimes God Smiles 』 においては、『 Pie Jesu 』 のことを 「『 The Gates of Paradise 』 の前奏曲 」 と紹介しているが、結局その2つとも実現していない。
色々と大人の事情があったのであろう。
提示された音楽は、もちろんいつもながらのサウンドスケイプスであるが。

フリップ個人名では唯一のCDシングル。
『A Blessing of Tears 』 からの ” Midnight Blue ” を除くと、翌年リリースされる 『 The Gates of Paradise 』 からのカットということになる。　ただし ” Sometimes God Hides ” は、1996年にリリースされたDGMのコンピ『 Sometimes God Hides 』 が初出となる。
また、” Abandonment To Divine Providence ” は、 『 The Gates of Paradise 』 より若干短めに編集されている。

The majority of this album has been assembled from studio performances recorded in the music room at Discipline Global Mobile in the spring of 1994. The Outer Darkness and in Fear And Trembling of the Lord are taken from the live performances in Argentina, which directly followed, and are based on the opening and closing soundscapes performed at the Cervantes Theatre, Buenos Aires, on 9 June 1994. Sometimes God Hides was performed and recorded in the foyer to the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 9 March 1996.

前述した通り、本作品は当初エリザベス・ホールでの4日間のインスタレーションで収録された音源で構成されるはずであったが、同インスタレーションから収録されたのは、” Sometimes God Hides ” 1曲のみである。
残りも何度にもなる1994年のアルゼンチン公演や、DGMでのスタジオ・ライヴの収録などで、寄せ集め音源集であることは否めない。
フリップとしては、「 The Gates of Paradise 」というコンセプトを出すことで統一感を出したつもりなのかもしれないが、聴く側にしてみると、フリップのコンセプトを意識することなくサウンドスケイプスということだけで十二分に金太郎飴を味わうことになる。
